The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
